Researching Heart Attack, Heart Failure, Stroke, Hypertension, Diabetes... With the increasing frequency of obesity and diabetes, especially in Georgia, cardiovascular disease is reaching epidemic proportions.  The Vascular Biology Center at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University knows the demand is high for new and better treatments. Our internationally recognized team of research experts have one goal - to make breakthroughs in the prevention and treatment of disease so that we all may live longer, healthier lives.

A postdoctoral training position designed for an experienced researcher to conduct advanced, independent, and collaborative studies in cardiovascular biology and cardiac regeneration. The successful candidate will design and conduct in vivo mouse experiments, including studies using genetically engineered mouse models, surgical and physiological procedures, tissue collection, and phenotypic analyses, as well as in vitro cell culture and molecular and cellular biology experiments. The candidate will also perform and analyze high-throughput sequencing experiments, including bulk RNA-seq, single-cell/single-nucleus RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, and/or spatial transcriptomics, and is expected to have strong computational and bioinformatics skills for largescale genomic data analysis. Responsibilities include experimental design, data collection and interpretation, development and optimization of research techniques, preparation of figures and manuscripts, presentation of research findings, and publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The candidate is expected to work with a high degree of independence, contribute to project development, collaborate with other laboratory members, and assist in mentoring junior trainees.

The duties include but are not limited to:

EXPERIEMENTS: Conduct research and analyze results of experiments and procedures using manual or computer techniques and, if necessary, develop special computer programs to facilitate analysis. Teach and participate in complex bacteriological, chemical and/or radio-chemical qualitative and quantitative analysis, macro- and micro-serological, histologic and cell culture procedures.

PROJECT PLANNING AND PROTOCOLS: Participate in project planning and development of research protocols while ensuring adherence to accepted scientific research principles and compliance with relevant federal guidelines.

SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE AND MEETINGS: Coordinate and participate in research of scientific literature. Summarize and evaluate findings. Develop derivative applications of applications of techniques developed by own research activities or reported by other research projects. Present findings at scientific meetings locally, nationally, and internationally.

ARTICLES: Compose articles for publication in scientific journals. Review articles prepared by others.

GENERAL DUTIES: Advise principal investigators, other PostDocs, students, and other research personnel on research techniques, procedures and other technological aspects of research activities.

TECHNICAL: Calibrate, troubleshoot, repair and operate microscopes, computer-linked analytical equipment, dedicated computers and other complex scientific equipment; instruct others in operation of equipment.

OTHER: Perform all other related duties as assigned.

PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent doctoral degree in molecular biology, cell biology, cardiovascular biology, biomedical sciences, or a related field. 

Experience in molecular and cellular biology and cell culture, including molecular cloning, plasmid transfection, RNA and protein analysis, transcriptional regulation, and post-translational modifications, is preferred. Experience with high-throughput sequencing and computational analysis is highly desirable, including bulk RNA-seq, single-cell or single-nucleus RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, and/or spatial transcriptomics. Familiarity with R and/or Python, as well as commonly used bioinformatics tools for large-scale genomic data analysis, is preferred. Candidates with demonstrated ability to integrate wet-lab experiments with sequencing and computational analyses will be especially competitive. Preferred technical expertise includes mouse colony management and genotyping, small-animal procedures and surgery, tissue collection, Western blotting, immunoprecipitation, immunofluorescence/immunohistochemistry, fluorescence imaging, and analysis of signaling pathways and protein-protein interactions.

KNOWLEDGE
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases or willingness to learn.
